What is Critical Zone Reset?
One of the quintessential control strategies used to save energy in buildings with VAV systems is Critical Zone Reset (CZR). Implementing this in your facility allows you to save on heating, cooling, and fan energy, which equates to more dollars in your pocket. To understand how this works, we need to break CZR down to the two main components – Discharge Air Temperature (DAT) reset and Static Pressure (SP) reset.
Discharge Air Temperature Reset
DAT reset is a control strategy designed to achieve a balance between occupant comfort and energy efficiency. This energy efficiency strategy has your Building Management System (BMS) analyze different variables to determine whether to adjust the supply air temperature set point or not. Typically, this is done by comparing the difference in space temperature and the set points for all the conditioned areas and deciding if we can comfortably raise or lower the supply temperature. Not only is this an energy saver, but optimally running your HVAC equipment can result in that equipment’s increased lifespan.
Static Pressure Reset
Similar to DAT reset, Static Pressure reset is something we can take advantage of year-round. This strategy optimizes the airflow by minimizing energy consumption while maintaining a comfortable indoor environment. The BMS will monitor Static Pressure and damper positions in your ductwork, then modulate the fan speed to ensure the proper amount of air is being delivered to the conditioned space. Once the BMS notices all VAV boxes are partially closed, that sends a signal to lower the static pressure by decreasing the fan speed.
